Onychomycosis aka Nail Fungus

Onychomycosis aka Nail Fungus

At Beam & Bare, we offer laser treatments to help aid in the nourishment and growth of nails affected by nail fungus.

Onychomycosis is a condition that involves toenails or fingernails. Toenails are susceptible to infection when they are exposed to the ideal environment for fungal growth: a humid, dark, and warm environment. Nail fungus is an infection that lives underneath the nail and in the skin of the nail bed.

If left untreated, the infection could spread to other nails or people.

Lasers can treat most nail fungus by penetrating and heating up the nail to destroy the fungus embedded in and under the nail plate. It may take up to 9 to 12 months for a healthy nail to grow, therefore it is advised that you start treatment immediately and be consistent with treatments. You should have very little to no side effects from this treatment.

Obtaining healthy nails is a SLOW process. Fingernails and toenails grow very slowly, especially when unhealthy, so you may not notice improvement for some time. When you do see improvements, they may be subtle. The nail may remain discoloured or not be joined to the nail bed. This treatment will not change the shape, width, or other deformities of the nail plate. It is normal to notice slow thinning of thick nails, clear nail growth at the nail bed, and reduced discolouration.

Pre Nail Fungus Laser Treatment Recommendations

For best results with laser therapy treatment, it is very important to follow both pre and post instructions. All of your nails/toenails will be treated.

Before each treatment

  • Remove all traces of nail polish (laser energy cannot pass through nail polish), and any cream or lotion from your toenails and feet before every treatment
  • If you have dark hair on your toes or fingers next to the nail, shave it before your treatment
  • Avoid using nail polish or artificial nails until the infection is cleared
  • Clip your nails as short as is comfortable (straight across). Long nails can break and offer fungi easy access to your nail bed
  • Do not do a lot of picking under the nail
  • Thick nails need to be filed down for better absorption
  • Clean and exfoliate your feet and toes before each treatment, this helps remove fungus living in the dead skin tissue
  • Bring a pair of clean cotton socks for after your appointment, new cotton socks are best for their moisture-wicking properties

After Laser Treatment Recommendations

Take a few steps after each session to avoid reinfection.

  • Wash the bedding and towels you have been using prior to treatment, use bleach when possible
  • Thoroughly clean your bathtub and shower before using
  • Sterilize and disinfect nail clippers and replace nail files. You can boil them in water for 30 minutes or submerge them in isopropyl alcohol or diluted bleach after every use
  • Clean your feet daily and dry them well before putting on clean socks
  • Spray shoes daily with an anti-fungal spray or powder

To keep it from coming back

Ongoing habits help prevent reinfection once the nail is clear.

  • Do not share shoes, socks, or nail clippers
  • Consider wearing slippers on all indoor hard-surface flooring, even in your own home
  • Wear protective, proper-fitting shoes for work and sports
  • Air out shoes regularly and use an anti-fungal spray or powder
  • Do not go barefoot in public places (health clubs, locker rooms, hotels, swimming pools, etc.)
  • Seek treatment for athlete's foot or other infections
  • Clean and dry your feet daily and use foot powder
