Nova Scotia may be known for fog, ocean air, cool mornings and cloudy days. But UV exposure is still very real here. A Nova Scotia melanoma study found that between 2007 and 2019, there were 4,063 invasive melanoma cases and 2,450 in situ melanoma cases documented in our province. The study also noted that invasive melanoma rates in Nova Scotia have been increasing.
SPF matters here, not just at the beach, not just in July and not just when you "feel the sun."
- āļø Cloudy day? Still SPF.
- š Driving? Still SPF.
- šŖ Sitting near windows? Still SPF.
- āļø Winter? Still SPF.
- š» Indoors most of the day? Still worth discussing your daily protection routine.
Quality
Choose a broad-spectrum SPF that protects against UVA and UVB. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends looking for at least SPF 30, with UVA protection included.
Quantity
The best SPF in the world cannot do its job if we apply a whisper-thin amount once in the morning and hope for the best. Health Canada advises applying sunscreen generously and evenly before sun exposure and reapplying at least every 2 hours when exposed.
ColoreScience is one of our favourite ways to make daily SPF feel wearable, beautiful and realistic, because the SPF you love wearing is the SPF you are more likely to use properly. See our full skincare lines for more daily protection options.
When to Get Checked
Noticing something new, changing, itchy, bleeding, crusting, growing or just "not quite right"? Please have it checked. At Beam & Bare, we do not diagnose suspicious lesions, moles or skin cancer.
GetSkinHelp is a virtual skin-health platform designed to help people access skin assessments, upload images and connect with healthcare professionals for concerns such as skin lesions, moles, rashes, acne, eczema and other skin conditions. You can also speak with your family doctor, nurse practitioner, pharmacist where appropriate, or seek urgent care if a spot is rapidly changing, bleeding, painful or concerning.
SPF is prevention. Skin checks are protection. Both matter. š¤
